Once you have finished our book, you will have a really good idea of what kind of people the characters are…you will really get to know them, as if they are real people.
Using Voice Threads, you are going to choose a character from your book and give us an idea of who that person is…it does not have to be the main character, but it should be someone who was fully developed in the story, was present for most, if not all, of the story and someone who had a main role. I say this because if you chose a character who was not fully developed, or not around very much, you are going to have a hard time completing this project.
You will be picking 5 chapters from the book to outline from the character’s point of view. They can be any 5 chapters, and they do not have to be 5 chapters in a row.
Important! Please remember that you are not reading straight from the book. You are re-reading the chapters you choose and retelling those chapters from your chosen character’s point of view.
You will start by going to Flickr and searching for images. The images should represent the “theme” of each chapter you are outlining from your character’s point of view. Remember, images do not have to be literal. (what does that mean?) It means that sometimes, an image gives us a feeling...go with those feelings you find in the images.
Once you have your 5 images, you will need to download them to your computer. To do this, click on the image. You should see an option to download the image; make sure it is saving as a jpeg image and save it to a designated folder in your computer. (Make sure you chose “save as” and designate where it will go…or it might be lost forever in there!)
Once you have your images, you will go to Voice Threads. If you do not already have an account, set one up using your Google email address.
From the main page, click “Create.”
Once you are in the “create” section, choose the “Upload” button
Choose “My Computer” when given options of where to upload from
Find the image in your computer and click “open”…the image should then download
Remember! We want to credit our work! This is super easy to do when using Voice Threads….and it gives you some practice using two open windows on the internet.
Open a new tab
Bring up your Flickr account
Go back to Voice Threads, and click on the slide you want to credit. Choose “add title and link.”
Go back to Flickr choose the appropriate image. Click “share” at the top of the image and copy the link.
Go back to Voice Threads and paste the link into the link window.
Success! You have given credit to the creator of your image! To test this, click on the link in your Voice Threads slide show. It should bring you to the image located on your Flickr account.
Once you have uploaded all of the images to your Voice Threads and moved them around in order (simply click on the slide you want to move and drag it where you want it in the show), you are ready to record your lovely voice!! Don’t be nervous!
Click on “comment” on the left menu
It should bring up your slide show. At the bottom of your first slide, you will see an option to “record”…click on that.
It will ask you to allow the Voice Threads software to access your microphone. Click allow.
It will then tell you “start recording”; once it starts recording, you will see a red bar pop up that says “stop recording”
Once you have finished your narration, click “stop recording.” Your recording will now play back. If you like it, click “save.” If not, re-record it.
Of course, we all want to see your finished product!! Make sure you put it on the student work page once it is finished. To do this:
Click “Share” on the left menu
At the bottom of that page, click “Embed”
A long code will pop up; copy that code.
Go back to our wiki to the "Student Work" page and click “edit” and then “widget”
Make sure you find your name in the student work chart and put the cursor in the appropriate box.
On the left hand menu, choose “other html”
Paste your widget code into the box that pops up.
Don’t forget to click save!
