Thematic Braiding Project

In this space, you are going to create a thematic braid with Google Docs. You may be wondering..."Ms. Belisle, what IS a thematic braid?"

First, let's think about the words "THEME" and "BRAID." What do they mean?

Theme: a unifying or dominant idea, motif, etc., as in a work of art

Braid: to weave together strips or strands of

So...what we will do is weave the dominant idea of the novel through three slides in our Google Docs presentation.

What you as readers will have to do first...of course, after you READ the book...is to pick a theme that stands out for you. You may have the same theme as someone else; however, we will likely all interpret and represent our ideas about that theme in different ways. This will give us many views of the book.

First, we will set up a Google account, if we don't already have one.
Steps for setting up our Google account:
1. Click here and enter your information to set up your account. You will set up a gmail email account. This will allow you access to Flickr and Google Docs.

Next, we will choose images that we feel represent our theme...I find that looking at images really helps me to solidify my thoughts.
Steps for finding our images:
1. Go to Flickr
2. If you don't already have an account, create one. If you have questions about that, come and talk to me.
3. In the "Search" box, type "braid" to find an image for your first slide
4. Once you have results, go back up by the Search box and choose "Advanced Search."
5. Scroll down to the bottom of the Advanced Search page and choose "Only Search Within Creative Commons-licensed content"
6. Then, start searching for images that you feel represent the theme you have chosen
7. Start marking images as favorites.

We will then create a Google Docs presentation, consisting of 4 slides.
Steps for setting up your Google Docs presentation:
1. Go to Google Docs
2. If you don't already have an account, create one. If you have questions about that, come and talk to me.
3. Choose "create" and then "presentation"
4. You will be able to choose how your slide looks, where your text boxes are, etc. Play around with it to see your options. If you have questions, come and talk to me.
Your presentation slides:

The first slide will have an image of your braid, as well as the title of the book, the author's name, publisher, and publishing date. You will also list your theme.

The second slide will have a quote from the book that you believe best represents the theme you have chosen, along with an image that represents the theme.

The third slide will have another image that represents the theme, as well as the following connections. text to text, text to self, and text to world.
What do those connections mean, exactly?? Click below to find out:

Your fourth slide will be your photo credits...give credit where credit is due! It's easy to do:
1. Go to your Flickr account and find the photo you used. Double click on it.
2. At the top of the photo, you will see a box that says "share" Click on that.
3. That will give you the address of the photo...copy it.
4. Go back to your 4th slide and type "slide 1" (or something similar, so we know which photo you are crediting); highlight that text
5. Click on "link" at the top of the page. Paste the address into the box. Click OK.

Below is an example of my Google Docs presentation for "Walk Two Moons"...my theme was "journey." Remember, some of us might find the same theme in the book,
but I will bet that we will all find different ways of expressing that theme.

Once you have created your Thematic Brading, you will want to post it to the "Student Work" page so everyone can see it.

1. To post your project, go back to Google Doc Presentations. Be sure that you have allowed public access. In the upper right corner, you will see a box that says "share." Click on the down arrow in that box...from the dropdown menu, choose "embed." You will see a code in a box. Highlight and copy that code.
2. To put your presentation on our wiki, go to the "Student Work" page and choose "edit." Go down to your name and click where you want the Thematic Braid to appear. You will then see a menu that has "Widget" on it (among other choices) Choose "Widget." From that menu, on the very bottom of the menu on the left, choose "Other HTML." A box will come up, and you can paste your embed code there. Then click "save" on the menu at the top of the page. Your widget link should be visible. You should click on it to test that it is working.
3. As always, if you are having troubles....come and talk to me!
