Public Service Announcement

From a theme you found in our novel, you are going to create a Public Service Announcement. What IS a Public Service Announcement?

Click on this link to read what it is, at least according to Wikipedia…

You are going to choose what you believe is a major theme from our novel and create a mixed media message that you want to inspire people, to make them think about your message…

You are going to use images you find on your Flickr account you think support and illustrate your message, as well as music you find on WeVideo.

You are also going to write a script for your Public Service Announcement. Sometimes it helps to look at some images before writing the script, to get an idea of what direction your PSA is taking…it is my guess that your script will evolve as you browse images and think about your message more and more.

Finding Images
You will start by going to Flickr and searching for images. The images should represent the message you want to convey to your viewers. Remember, images do not have to be literal. (what does that mean?) It means that sometimes, an image gives us a feeling...go with those feelings you find in the images.

Also remember that we are searching “Creative Commons” licenses images only!!

Once you have your images (at least 7-8 images), you will need to download them to your computer. To do this, click on the image. You should see an option to download the image; make sure it is saving as a jpeg image and save it to a designated folder in your computer. (Make sure you chose “save as” and designate where it will go…or it might be lost forever in there!)

To get started...
Now go to WeVideo and sign in/create an account with your Google Account. Once you have done so:
  1. Click on “+create new project”
  2. Name your project in the pop up box that will appear
  3. Click on the “Media Files” tab
  4. On the top navigation bar, you will see “+import media files” Click on it
  5. A blue and white lined box will appear. Choose “Browse” in the lower right corner
  6. Find the image you want to import from the file in your computer.
  7. Click on that image and choose “Open” from the lower corner
  8. Your image will appear in the blue and white box. You can continue to choose all of the images you want and download them at one time.
  9. Once you have all of your images, choose “Upload”; your images will now begin to download
10. Once all of your images have downloaded, put them into a new folder
11. Go back to the Dashboard. Choose “Project Media Files” and “+Share Media Files”
12. Your images should show up in the “Project Media Files” section.

Images
To add your images simply drag them into the “Graphics” section on the bottom half of the page. You can rearrange your images by dragging them to where you want them on the Graphics line.

Transitions & Graphics
  1. You can also add graphics. These are text boxes you can add for your title slide and your credits slide. Don’t forget to give credit where credit is due! Make sure that you provide citations for the images you use.
  2. You can add transitions to make the pictures change in different ways.

Play around with these effects to see what you can come up with!

Video
For this project, you will also be using some video. It is easiest if you shoot your own video, so as to avoid any copyright infringement.

To do so, use the class iPad to record your video. Think of your message again…what kind of moving picture can help to get your message across?

Once you have saved the video to your computer, upload it to WeVideo using the same process you used to upload your images.

Again, make sure you share it and that it shows up in your “Project Media Files” Section.

Now from the Dashboard, choose “+Create New Video” Once in the create video section, you should be able to find your folder with your images and your video in your “Private files section.”

Audio
You will need to record the script you wrote for your PSA. A good trick to make your audio match up with your pictures is to record your audio by sentences, or groups of sentences,
that you want to fit with one picture…you can then add the audio in parts and make the picture stay as long as the audio.
In order to start recording, click on the megaphone right underneath your pictures. A dialogue box will pop up with instructions for you to follow.

Once you have saved your audio, it will show up as a white box with a squiggly black line through it with your pictures.
Make sure you name your audio, so you know which audio piece goes where.

It’s EASY to add your audio to your presentation…just click on the appropriate audio box and drag it down to the audio line.

After you finish your project and save it, you will upload it to You Tube.

Uploading your PSA to You Tube
